One of the reasons I started a gameblog thingy and use Backloggd and Retroachievements is because I play so much stuff I forgot what I've played. I glanced over my logs and was like... oh yeah, I did play that! This is but a smattering.

Favorites

  • Atomicrops is a farming tower defense game that sat in my library forever. I finally played it and had a blast. The goofy graphics and the loop are lots of fun.
  • Isles of Sea & Sky is a delightful sokoban puzzle game with cute graphics. Impulse buy because I loved the look. I was totally hooked on this thing and ended up sinking over 30 hours into it. Some of the puzzles are devilishly hard, and solving them was quite rewarding.
  • Billionaire Lovers was a great time despite the repetitive gatcha game. Great short 'n sweet VN. These days romance VNs don't really keep my attention unless they have toxic LIs and I loved how unhinged one of the guys is.
  • Golden Krone Hotel is a super streamlined roguelike with some neat vampire mechanics. In retrospect, this is a technical 3-star, but I had a great time while I was in it.
  • Dispatch is a fun superhero comedy story game. Gave me a story hangover. Would punch an obnoxious reporter again. Would definitely go in for season 2.

Bizarro of Note

  • Rogue Light Deckbuilder ... Husband extols you to build the deck, so you must. When you build the deck, you get money. Be very strong for husband.

Let's Play Again! Back for More

  • Revisited Slay the Spire when my partner bought a Steam copy and really got into loading up on relics.
  • Revisited Hades and beat the game my 15th run! EXTREMELY EXCITING! I still need to go back and unlock more story! I will this year! Surely!
  • Revisited The Planet Crafter to play the Planet Humble DLC. It was More of That, and I really enjoy this game as a exploration and crafting sim.

I WILL COME BACK FOR YOU DEPT - Games I will play again, because they are good but I am shitty

  • Ender Lillies is so cool but like so hard man.
  • Silksong... maybe. It sorta wore out its welcome for me as a "game to play" around 30 hours, even with mods for QOL, but I love the characters, art, story, vibes, etc. and I'm sure I'll revisit it when the new DLC comes out next year.

Unexpected Old Gems

I emulated a lot of stuff, including a butt load of Castlevania games, but two shmups stood out for me.

  • Over Horizon is a visually interesting NES shmup that never got an NA release.
  • I was able to play a Gyruss arcade machine this summer, and found that I like the NES Gyruss even better!

Obligatory Survivors Like

  • Voids Vigil was my favorite of these. This dev also made the excellent Boneraiser Minons. I play too many of these games, honestly, but both of those are in my top 5.

TOO MANY HOURS please help my family is starving

  • Farm Together 2, hands down. 150 hours. Don't click the link. Avoid. Save yourself. I grabbed both the DLCs, Meadows and Gothic, and loved them and I will probably buy everything they release for this game. I haven't even fully expanded my farm yet. There's just sooo much.

All in all, a great year for gaming. Hit releases from the 1980's on up to 2025. There was hole digging and belt assembling and angel shooting and Mr. Do!ing (so much Mr. Do! ing) and first-person head-bob motion sickness and I don't think I touched a single fucking EA game, how about that. Let's do it again this year!

Gyruss is unique, and I have yet to see another shmup play the way it does. Also: Bach!
